Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. On verso, the letter is addressed to "Wm Lloyd, Garrison. Boston Mass." and it is postmarked with a red, circular stamp reading, "Providence R.I. Jun 27."George William Benson writes to William Lloyd Garrison with "great pleasure" after learning that Garrison will "lecture in Pawtucket [Rhode Island] on the evening of the 4th of July." Benson lists some of the speakers who have agreed to lecture in Providence on that date and promises "we shall make every effort to assemble an audience befitting the occassion." He comments that "prospect is encouraging" since a local minister, Pharcellus Church, recently changed his position "and preached all day last Sabbath to his congregation on the sinfulness of prejudice, and slavery, and their duty to the oppressed." Benson then gives Garrison a schedule of the meetings, telling him "we shall depend on you being at our evening meeting and offering a resolution" or seconding one proposed by Mr. Perry, which Benson then lists. He suggests Garrison include his remarks his "exposition of the 58th chapter of Isiah" and then shares his hope that Isaac Knapp will soon recover from ill health. Benson also recommends Garrison spend a few days in Providence and "visit individuals as it is important some should see and become acquainted with you."
