Description
Holograph, signedJames Haughton compares American anti-slavery with trans-Atlantic anti-slavery: "We who work with you at this side [of] the water, have no such opposition to encounter; every blow we strike against the monster--Slavery--brings us honor & credit, with the people." He admits that some of the so-called better classes "look upon us as enthusiasts, & I am even considered by some a little light in the head." In Ireland, "we have to work upon apathetic & indifferent hearts," and so their zeal would probably cool if it were not "warmed by your devotion to the cause of humanity."
