Holland, John Timanus, William J

Description

Bill of sale dated March 16, 1858 for a Negro slave named Harriet Linn sold by John Holland to William J. Timanus, both of Howard County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $275. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace John Ridgely of Jno. (John) and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins, the document identifies Harriet Linn as age about 18 years and of light mulatto complexion and requires that she serve Timanus for 10 years before being set free. (Editor's note: In 19th century Howard County, using the first initial of the father's first name or an abbreviation of that first name, as in John Ridgely "of Jno.", i.e., of John, was common practice if there were other persons with the same name, especially in various generations of the same family. Blank pages 2 and 3 were not scanned and thus are not included.)
