Julian Wisner Hinkley (1838-1916) was a school teacher in Waupun when the war broke out. He immediately enlisted in Co. E of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry and rose to become its captain. Hinkley fought at the battles of Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and in the Atlanta campaign. He describes draft riot duty in New York and newly recruited European immigrants and Ojibwe Indians as well as commenting on slavery, Southern life, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. This book was assembled with his approval in 1912 from his letters, diary, and a manuscript memoir. It is one of a series issued for the 50th anniversary of the Civil War.
