Dedication above caption title: Inscribed to my friend ex judge Kerr Paterson [i.e. Patterson], N.J.Cover drawing shows two stone columns between which is a metal gate with an enlarged padlock.Summary: In stereotyped ethnic language, the narrator describes a black man who goes to heaven but finds the "golden gate" locked; he comes back down to earth to tell his fellow congregation, who are upset about the situation; they resolve to steal the padlock from the gate.Dealer's stamp on cover at top right: R.
