Description

Deed of manumission dated May 31, 1860 by Rachel G. Meredith of Howard County for her Negro slaves named Ann, Augustus, Catherine, Hanson, and William Snowden, Eliza and Stephen Harody, and Elizabeth and George Hopkins, and chlidren born to the above named female slaves. Witnessed by Reuben Warfield and Justice of the Peace Lloyd W. Delauder on May 31 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins on November 26, the document identifies the slaves by name and birth date: Hanson Snowden born January 8, 1830, Augustus Snowden born August 15, 1832, Catherine Snowden born March 8, 1836, Ann Snowden born January 9, 1839, and William Snowden born April 24, 1843--each to be set free when age 35 years is attained; Eliza Harody born September 29, 1857, Stephen Harody born September 18, 1859, Elizabeth Hopkins born February 4, 1858, and George Hopkins born September 20, 1859--each to be set free when age 25 years is attained; and any child or children of the above named female slaves--each to be set free when age 25 years is attained.
