Encyclopedia article about Ralph D. Abernathy, Martin Luther King Jr.'s chief partner in the civil rights movement. Abernathy helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), succeeding King as SCLC president and leading the Poor People's Campaign March on Washington D.C. after King's assassination. Abernathy attended Atlanta University and pastored First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama as well as West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
