Article details the history of the carillon installed in Marquette Hall, March 11, 1970The Marquette Tribune Wednesday, March 11, 1970 Marquette carillon has colorful, interesting ring by Jeanne Bourget Every 15 minutes, day and night, we are reminded of Marquette's carillon bells, but many of us know nothing about their origin, operation or even their location. The 48-bell carillon is the largest of its kind in Milwaukee and among the largest in the country. Given to the university in 1967 by Mrs. John C. Dwan of Duluth, Minn., the carillon is located in the tower of Marquette hall and not, as many students think, in Gesu Church. THE LARGEST of the 48 bells is five and one-half feet tall and Weighs 5,000 pounds, and the smallest is only 12 inches high and weighs 24 pounds. Fifteen of the bells have inscriptions, five which are religious in nature and ten dedicated to Marquette's various colleges.
