Ross describes himself as a "poor colored man" who was recently honorably discharged from the 43rd Colored Troops of the Union Army, and who has since been plagued with rheumatism to the extent that he is unable to work and barely able to move about. Ross requests any assistance Garrison might provide in securing him funds so as to consult a physician to treat his condition
