Description

Sheet with two drawings by Elbert Weinberg of a proposed memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr. A bust of King with his arms upraised in impassioned speech is atop a pillar. In one drawing, words, including “FREE AT LAST / FREE AT…”, are partially visible, inscribed on the pillar. A woman is shown standing beside the monument, providing scale. The sheet is inscribed “Proposals for / Dr. Martin Luther King / Memorial / EW / JULY ’86.” In 1986, the birthday of Martin Luther King was designated a national holiday and there was renewed interest in erecting a monument to King in Washington, D.C. A memorial to King had first been proposed in 1968, shortly following his assassination.
