Description

In 1928 Cleveland City Council honored Morgan for his efforts to rescue men trapped under Lake Erie after the Cleveland Waterworks explosion of 1916. Cleveland inventor and businessman Garrett Augustus Morgan (1877-1963) invented the gas mask and the traffic light. He moved to Cleveland in 1895. In 1908 he helped found the Cleveland Association of Colored Men. He was also a founder, in 1920, of the weekly newspaper Cleveland Call, forerunner of the Call and Post.
