Description
William P. Moore (1827-1862) was born in Indiana, moved to Wisconsin in 1847, and enlisted from Black River Falls, Jackson County, Wisconsin. He was chosen captain of Co. G, 10th Infantry, also known as the Jackson County Rifles, which left for the front on Oct. 8, 1861. In his diary he describes the training of the company at Camp Holton and its actions in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama from September 7, 1861, to June 26, 1862. The diary also includes thoughtful reflections on slavery and the effects of war. Moore was killed in a skirmish at Larkinsville, Alabama, on July 4, 1862.
