Description

This folder consists of July 1964 WATS line messages regarding incidents in Mississippi, the raw material for later better-written WATS line digests used for communication and publicity purposes. In addition to listing threatening incidents and efforts to keep track of volunteers as they traveled around Mississippi, this period of time includes the arrival of WATS line equipment for the civil rights workers and the passage of the Civil Rights Act. A list of summer volunteers in Mississippi as of July 3, 1964 can be found on scanned pages 35-42. New volunteers are also listed in the WATS lines notes as they arrive in Mississippi. There's also a July 10, 1964 report on community centers around the state, starting on scanned page 139.
