Description
Extract dated March 21, 1854 from the will of the late Thomas J. Bowie of Montgomery County, setting the terms for the sale and manumission of his slaves. Recorded by Wm (William) Thompson of R., Register of Wills for Montgomery County, more than 3 years after Bowie's death (July 26, 1850), the document shows how easily slavery was legally maintained beyond the generation of slaveholder and slave. (Editor's note: In 19th century Montgomery County, using the first initial of the father's first name, as in William Thompson "of R.", or an abbreviation of that first name was common practice if there were other persons with the same name, especially in various generations of the same family. What name the “R.” refers to is not known.)
