Dorsey, Charles W Worthington, Nicholas, of John

Description

Indenture (contract) of mortgage release dated February 7, 1851 from Charles W. Dorsey, executor for the late Nicholas Worthington of Jno. (John), to Nelson Phelps, all of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for property including slaves named Anne, Ben, George, Henry, and Sarah. The loan (debt) is in the amount of $306.73, as recorded in chattel record liber J. L. M. number 1 folio 177. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace David Feelinger and recorded by district clerk W. H. Worthington, the present document identifies specific property to be returned to Phelps, including various slaves: Sarah age about 32 years, George age about 8 years, Ben age about 6 years, Henry about 4 years, and Anne about 2 years. (Editor's note: In 19th century Howard County, using the first initial of the father's first name or an abbreviation of that first name, as in Nicholas Worthington "of Jno.", i.e., of John, was common practice if there were other persons with the same name, especially in various generations of the same family. Also, during this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county on June 14, 1851. Blank page 4 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
