"Dianna Leach, a senior in Temple University's School of Communications and Theater, has earned the school's first Jessica Savitch Scholarship. The scholarship, established last year at Temple, the University of Pennsylvania, and Ithaca College in New York, is given to selected undergraduates preparing for careers in broadcast journalism. Leach, who hopes for a career as a writer/producer in broadcast journalism, has worked at Temple's radio station, Jazz 90, WRTI-FM (90.1), and at Philadelphia's WTXF-TV 29. She is a past member of Temple's Association of Black Journalists and Temple PIRG, the University's public interest research group. "I'm surprised and very happy to have won," said Leach, who learned about the scholarship from faculty member Linda Wright Moore, of Temple's radio-tv-film department. Members of Temple's selection committee commented on Leach's excellent writing skills, her unusual maturity, and the quality of her on-air performance. The scholarship was established to honor Jessica Savitch for her pioneering role in broadcast journalism, which helped open the profession to a new generation of women. The scholarship committee is composed of family, friends, attorney Arthur G. Raynes, Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and representatives of the schools receiving the endowment. Savitch co-anchored the news in Philadelphia on KYW-TV 3 in the late 1970's before reaching national prominence with NBC. She died in a car accident in 1983."
