Denmark Vesey Monument-Hampton Park-front side

View
@ CUNY, City College of New York

Description

CCNY Architecture Travel Fellows; This monument to Denmark Vesey was unveiled in 2014, at which time it was the only monument to an African or African American in the greater Charleston area. However, the monument stands in Hampton Park, on the north side of the city, and not in Marion Square, in the center of town. The inscriptions on both the front and rear of the monument describe Vesey's life and his legacy as a slave insurrectionist.
