Bill of sale dated May 1, 1850 for Negro slaves named Elizabeth, John, Judith, and Samuel gifted by La Fayette Watkins to his grandchildren Andrew, Francis A., Frederick L., and William P. Watkins, in consideration of the love and affection he bears these children of his son Richard Galen Watkins, all of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Witnessed by Wm. B. (William B.) Hammond on May 1 and recorded by district clerk W. H. Worthington on June 4, the document identifies which child is to receive which slave: Frederick is to receive the mulatto woman named Judith, Francis is to receive Elizabeth, William is to receive John, and Andrew is to receive Samuel. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
