Henry Street Music School

Description

This folder contains materials created/collected by the Henry Street Music School. The Music School of Henry Street Settlement was formed in 1927, although the Settlement had offered musical activities for residents of New York City's Lower East Side for many years. The school, which opened to students in the fall of 1928, offered classes in instrumental and vocal music, dancing, and instrument construction and repair. This folder specifically contains materials related to the school's Riker's Island Project, bringing music education to youth imprisoned at Rikers Island, and providing further education after release. These materials include program notes, lists of instruments rented out, participation charts, organizational lists, and correspondence. Reports on this program showed that the particpants where 51% African American, and 41% Puerto Rican.
