Description

This folder contains the MFDP's 227-page legal brief before the U.S. House of Representatives, challenging the legitimacy of the white Mississippi Democrats in Congress--on the basis that African Americans had been systematically excluded from the electoral system--and calling for new elections. It also contains correspondence, articles, and memos relating to the Congressional Challenge and to an article by Richard Rovere about the Challenge in the New Yorker magazine. "The Mississippi Challenge: Some Questions and Answers" by Joseph Meissner and Steven R. Nelson of the Washington Human Rights Project provides very concise and clear answers to issues raised by the Congressional Challenge. The Harvard Civil Rights Committee asks to do additional civil rights research report. There's also a blank form for members of the MFDP's Lawyers Lobby and a summary of the contested election brief.
