April 3, 1955 Reel 208, Item 3 Ragtime Joe Where the little darkies go, There's a little pickaninny By the name of Ragtime Joe, Now when it a-comes to spelling, Little Ragtime's brain works fast, He's the only little scholar That'll hold down his own class; One day the teacher told his class To spell one kind of bird, That sort of bird was chicken, And he could not spell the word, And when they called on Ragtime Joe To spell the word for them, He did not hesitate one bit, But this is the way he begin: Chorus: C and away he begin, H is the next letter in, I am the third, And C am the letter for to season the word, And the K am a-fillin', E am near the end, C-H-I-C-K-E-N, Dat is the way to spell Chick-O-en.
