Description

This folder contains an assortment of documents from 1964-1965, the bulk of them being from 1965. "Harvard's Responsibility to Mississippi," an article from the Crimson, shows Harvard to be linked to the White Citizens Council and the all-white Democratic Party of Mississippi through its extensive financial holdings there. Several newspaper clippings by sensationalist Cold War columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak accuse civil rights workers of being communists. A couple of SNCC press release point out that federal anti-poverty funds in Mississippi will be administered by whites publicly committed to segregation. There's a brief history of the Southern Tenant Farmers Union. A detailed analysis of the MFDP's challenge to the seating of Mississippi's all-white congressional representatives on January 4, 1965, and the resulting vote, is also here.
