Vickers, John

Description

Description: Decorated Vessel; John Vickers’ inventory included utilitarian vessels and kitchenware, such as pots, dishes, basins, and pitchers. Much of their production was red earthenware, from red clay found in Chester County and other parts of the region. Located in Caln and then Uwchlan, the last pottery operated until the early 1880s. A 5th generation potter, Vickers’ was also active on the Underground Railroad. John Vickers was able to transport freedom seekers in his wagon as he drove to places farther west and north. When forwarding runaway slaves to the next station on the Underground Railroad, Vickers often signed a letter of introduction, “thy friend pot.” Not infrequently, escaped slaves were concealed in the hay among the pottery in the wagon. www.chestercohistorical.org, Scott (2008)
