Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Manuscript annotated on recto, with "Oct(?) 1870" in pencil along top-right of page.Wendell Phillips informs William Lloyd Garrison that he replied to "Brown's invitation" when he received Garrison's note, and notes that he was obliged to decline. Phillips asserts that Baltimore is "an important point", and states his hopes that Garrison will be able to go there. Phillips proclaims that he has read Theodore Lyman's "folly", and states his plan to respond to it in the form of a lecture on the "Garrison Mob". Phillips opines that the most "graceful form" of response for Garrison would be a letter or an article recounting his recollections of the event.
