Description

This payroll acknowledges that Captain T. M. R. Talcott, Engineer Service, paid certain slave owners for work performed by their slaves in removing the Craney Island Light House in connection with the defenses of Norfolk, Virginia, during April 1862. Slave owner Tazewell Taylor provided slaves named Solomon, a carpenter, and Walter, a laborer. Slave owner John Peters provided slaves named Lester, John (Peters), Willis, John (Brown), Weston, Ralph, and Toney. Slave owner A. T. M. Cooke provided a slave named Archer. "Not know[n]" slave owner provided a slave named William. Tazewell Taylor, John Peters, and A. T. M. Cooke all acknowledged received of payment. The unknown owner was not paid.
