Mrs. Charlotte Stephens 1320 Bishop Street Little Rock, Arkansas May 17, 1951 Collected by Irene Carlisle Reel 119 Item 3 I'LL NEVER TURN BACK NO MORE (Do you remember the song?) Oh, yes, ma'am. My stepfather used to sing that so touchingly. He said the day that he and his master-- his master was coming to Hot Springs, trying to get there for his trouble--sickness--and he said the people stood watching them, both white and colored, and they sang that: No more, no more, no more, my Lord; I'll--(now, he said, 'Never turn back NO more! but I said ANY; would you rather I'd sing it the way--would you rather I'd sing it with that bad grammar) I'll never turn back no more. No more, no more, no more, ray Lord; I'll never turn back no more. Oh, brother, don't you think it best To carry the Witness in your breast? l'll never turn back no more. No more, etc. I have some friends before me gone, And I'm determined to follow on. if you get there before I do, Tell all my friends I'm coming too. No more, etc. "He would sing that--oh, so touchingly!" "Oh, they were bidding him (the master) goodbye. He (her stepfather) said they sang that...(?)...until they got out of sight and out of hearing; until they got into the wagon. He and his master were coming; he was driving his master and they were coming to Hot Springs for his health...Colored and white both...
