Council of Federated Organizations (U.S.). Panola County Office (Miss.)

Description

This folder contains documents showing COFO's interest in helping local black people to improve their economic circumstances through a variety of federal programs. These memos and reports show volunteers' pursuit of information about federal job training programs, institutional ways to help children receive federally-funded milk, ways to help people obtain their welfare and old age benefits, and ways for them to get agricultural subsidies. There's a lengthy report on the possibility of establishing cooperatives. A couple of documents reveal both the federal government's support of segregation and racial discrimination and list federal jobs from which black Mississippians appear to be barred.
