Description

This assembly of the Alabama Democrats plans to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore, despite the withdrawal of the state's delegation from the earlier meeting in Charleston: "There is a vacancy in the Delegation of Alabama, caused by the withdrawal of our Delegation in a body from said Convention, now in response to the invitation of that Convention, the Democratic party of Alabama...hereby determine to send Delegates to Baltimore, to meet and co-operate with the National Democratic Party for the preservation and protection of the rights of the people of all the States of this Union, expressing our purpose to abide the action, and support the nominees of that Convention, for President and Vice-President of the United States, and having confidence in the patriotism, intelligence and loyalty to the Constitution of our Delegates, we will not trammel them with instructions, but leave them free to act for the good of the country, according to the emergencies by which they may be surrounded." While the Alabamians pledge cooperation with the national organization, they also endorse the 1856 Democratic platform (advocating popular sovereignty) and the Supreme Court's decision in the Dred Scott case.
