Image of a section of Thomas Nast's famous wood engraving entitled "Emancipation," which originally appeared in Harper's Weekly on January 24, 1863. A circular image of an African American family relaxing in a well-appointed room serves as the focal point of the image. The word "Emancipation" is printed above the scene.The liberation of Georgia's more than 400,000 slaves began during the chaos of the Civil War and continued well into 1865. Nast's cartoon aimed to arouse sympathy for freed blacks following emancipation.
