Description

Swift, Kipple, and Bryan listed as part of Nat's history of sale.Bill of sale for Nat's indenture, between William Stothart and Guy Bryan, 28th Nov. 1812, handwritten on reverse side of letter. Pennsylvania passed a gradual emancipation statute in 1780. Children subsequently born to women who were slaves before the Act’s effective date remained in slavery until the age of 28; until then they had the status of indentured servants. The persons mentioned in the letter all appear to be Philadelphians.
