Description

This house, not extant, was owned by an African American couple, William Toby and his wife, Fannie Dodge Toby. They and their children, William, Harold, Ervine, and Ethel, lived here from about 1900 through about 1930. Fannie, and probably William, were the descendants of enslaved people who came to the Lead Region from Missouri with Gov. Henry Dodge in 1827. The house was in disrepair in 1938 when it was razed by Bob Neal and Edgar Hellum. Mantel pieces from the house were used in Trelawney, one of the cottages in the Pendarvis State Historical Site complex and in the Max and Ava Fernekes home on Pine Street in Mineral Point. A note on the back of the photograph contains the date, 11/11/38.
