Description
Porter served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1832 to 1834 and from 1837 to 1839. In the letter he discusses political matters, such as the lack of local support for Martin Van Buren and competition between the Whig and Democratic parties in Pennsylvania. When he writes “a White man,” he is referring to a supporter of Senator Hugh L. White. He also mentions a slave he wants to purchase.
