Description
This is a bill of sale from John Mory to David Stoddard Greenough for a five-year-old boy named Dick, 30 July 1785. David Stoddard Greenough was a wealthy merchant and lawyer of Roxbury (now Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts. He was also an ardent patriot, a member of the Sons of Liberty, and served on the Committee of Public Safety under George Washington. While slavery was officially ended in the state by 1785, sales of slaves continued until around 1790, and indentured servants were sold in the same manner (See the online presentation of an indenture between Greenough and Mory).
