Description

This telegram, which is co-signed by the Governor and the Chief Justice of Washington Territory, as well as two other prominent citizens, addresses President Grover Cleveland with multiple concerns. The first topic is a defense of Governor Watson C. Squire's decision, on the advice of Chief Justice Roger S. Greene, to proclaim martial law in Seattle. The authors update Cleveland on conditions in Seattle, emphasizing again the need for federal troops, and note also the request of Judge John P. Hoyt and Territorial Secretary N. H. Owings for troop support in Olympia to prevent an outbreak of violence there.
