Interview with Viola Johnson conducted by Claytee D. White on March 12, 1996. Johnson lived in a tent when she moved from Fordyce to Las Vegas in 1942. Her first home was a tent that measured approximately ten feet by twelve feet where she lived with six other family members. She worked at the Hilton and the Sands Hotels as a maid and at the Riviera Hotel making sandwiches in the pantry. After working long hours she was still able to be active in the church and with her family.
