Topics addressed by Brown: graduating from high school and going right to work; receiving encouragement to consider college; enrolling at Central Connecticut State University; getting involved in national politics while a student, especially the racial injustice and discrimination he and other African American students experienced or witnessed; during this same time getting married and starting a family; the escalation of the war in Vietnam; the lottery; his resistance to the draft and defending a country abroad that did not defend him and other African Americans at home; awareness of racism in the draft process itself, knowing that a lot of white and middle or upper class men were avoiding or getting out of the draft while his friends had no other option; his work at the Upward Bound Program and his advice to students to pursue an education instead of enlisting in the military.
