Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Legacy catalog card identifies the date of publication of this manuscript as "3 June 1868."Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. Above the salutation, the number "70" is written in pencil.William Smeal writes to William Lloyd Garrison introducing "Peter Kerr, a worthy young man and a compositor by trade who proposes leaving for Boston." Smeal tells Garrison "He is possessed of very satisfactory testimonials as to character and working capacity" and asks if Garrison could help him find employment in Boston. In the postscript, Smeal says the newspapers are "all up with 'impeachment'", referring to the impeachment proceedings of President Andrew Johnson, "and that General [Ulysses S.] Grant & Speaker [of the House of Representatives Schuyler] Colfax are the nominees for President". Smeal comments on Grant's nomination, "how lamentable it will be if a man of War is to rule over your, rather than a civilian."
