Description

Jaylin Allen-Wallace interviews Kathryn Bowen on April 26, 2016 in Madison, Wisconsin. Born in McNair, Mississippi in 1941, Bowen tells of growing up on a farm with her 13 siblings, and later moving to Madison at 19. Bowen compares issues facing African-American youth in the South and the North, as well as through the generations that she has lived in Madison. This interview is part of an oral history series done of residents of Madison on changes affecting the African-American community, beginning around the 1960s and continuing through to 2016. Three Madison high school students were trained in oral history techniques then interviewed black residents who had resided in the city for at least 20-40 years. In the interviews, students asked about four broad areas: 1) family history; 2) education; 3) work history; 4) and issues affecting the Black community in Madison, such as housing, educational opportunities, and racism and prejudice.
