Interview with Jules Chametzky, important figure in the UMass Amherst Department of English, founder of the Massachusetts Review. Youth in Brooklyn and study in Brooklyn College (1946-1950); run-in with anti-Communist hearings in 1950s. Finished PhD in 1958 and came to UMass after being recruited by Leo Marx and Sidney Kaplan; origins of Massachusetts Review; union activities; contributions to democratizing governance in the English Department; changes on campus in 1960s and 1970s; African and African American students on campus and racism on campus; beginnings of Afro American Studies Department.
