Description

Collection of popular American sheet music, including many songs from minstrel shows, Vaudeville shows, and musicals, as well as some instrumental pieces, many arranged, for solo piano. Many of the sheet music covers include caricatures of African-Americans, some with photographs of blackface performers. All were published between 1898 and 1905. Bound in dark brown leather with gilt stamped spine title, gilt stamped inner edge, and letter "M." on page 1 of cover. Ownership inscription on front pastedown of v. 1, Helen of Manchester; presentation inscription from Jeannette Robinson Murphy to the Dowager Duchess of Manchester: "To Her Grace, the Dowager Duchess of Manchester, with the hope that she will use her influence in the behalf of my coming to merrie old England", dated 1904.Helen of Manchester collection of popular music, 1899-1905 (Mus 508.56). Although she worked to preserve music from the slave tradition, her writing also reflected the blatant racism of her time and place in American culture. Helen of Manchester, born Helena Zimmerman (1878-1971) was the daughter of Eugene Zimmerman, a wealthy Cincinnati businessman. In 1900 she married the Earl of Manchester, divorcing him in 1931, before marrying the 10th Earl of Kintore in 1937. Jeannette Robinson Murphy's presentation inscription was to the elder Dowager Duchess of Manchester, born Consuelo Yznaga, who died in 1909, and whose sheet music collection was presumably bound together and possibly expanded...
