Description
Pictured here in a Cleveland Indians uniform crossing home plate, Al Smith (1928–2002) played 12 productive seasons in the American League (1953-1964) with four teams, including the Indians (1953–1957, 1964). The outfielder/third baseman had career totals of 164 home runs, 676 runs batted in, and a batting average of .272. He was a two-time All-Star, and played on two American League pennant winners, the Indians in 1954, and Chicago White Sox in 1959. He also played in the Negro Leagues, having been signed at age 17 by the Cleveland Buckeyes.
