Washum, Clinton
Description
Clinton Washum was born on February 2, 1889, in Paducah, Kentucky. As a young man he settled in Buffalo, New York, where he worked with the railroads. In 1924 he came to Toledo. He was attracted to the city's railroad activity. In this interview, Mr. Washum discusses the adjustments he was required to make as racial discriminiation increased in the late '20s. As a Toledoan, he was involved in the building of the present main library and also participated in the modernization of the Anthony Wayne Trail. He also discusses his unusual heritage; his paternal grandfather was Cherokee, his paternal grandmother was Irish, and his mother was African American. He died in Toledo on February 28, 1983.
