Description

Hand-colored glass plate negative taken by Fred Van Hoesen between 1917 and 1924 of two African American men working in a cornfield in Montgomery County, Maryland. The man on the left is preparing to operate a walking plow being pulled by a horse, while the man on the right has used a corn knife to cut the corn stalks he is holding. (Editor's note: Fred Van Hoesen started work as the cooperative extension agent for Montgomery County, Maryland in 1917 and died in 1924, thus the Date Original of 1917-1924.)
