Description

Photograph of Carroll-Barrister House built in 1722 at the corner of Main and Conduit Streets in Annapolis, Maryland by Charles Carroll, a prominent surgeon and a wealthy Irishman. His son, Charles Carroll, the Barrister (1723-1783), who was born in and inherited the house from his father, was an American lawyer, statesman and, in 1776-1777, delegate to the Continental Congress. Through the efforts of Historic Annapolis, Inc., the house was saved from demolition in 1954 and moved to its present site on King George Street at St. John's College. The label of "Tydings' House" can be explained by the fact that Eleanor Davies Tydings-Ditzen was the last owner of the house and helped facilitate its move. In the picture, several African Americans are standing in front of the tall white wooden fence on the right. (Photograph provided courtesy of Marion E. Warren, Annapolis, Maryland, file number 395.)
