Blueprint map of showing Nashville in 1903 that was compiled by Robert Boyte Crawford Howell for the real estate office of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway Company. Dates are shown across certain areas of the city to represent the date of extension of corporate limits. Other feature are labeled including businesses, street names, Mt. Olivet cemetery, the Tennessee Central Railroad, Belmont College, Vanderbilt University, and Fisk University.The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway was the first railway to operate in the state of Tennessee, established in 1848. During the Civil War, the rail line was strategic for both armies. In 1957 it merged with its competitor, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N). Today, the same route between Nashville and Chattanooga is operated by CSX Transportation, which took over the L&N in 1982.
