Description

Degree Type: thesisDegree Name: Master of Science (MS)Date of Degree: 1982Granting Institution: Atlanta UniversityDepartment/ School: Department of ChemistryThe thermal and optical charactertization of aliphatic and aromatic polyamides; aromatic and aliphatic polyesters; and their corresponding block copolymers are discussed. Two thermal analysis techniques, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry were employed to obtain the glass transition temperatures, (Tg), the melting temperatures, (Tm), and the decomposition temperatures, (T^), of the following polymers: poly( cis, trans-1,4-cyclohexalene- trans-1,4-cyclohexane- dioate); poly( 1,4-phenylene terephthalate); poly( 1,2-cyclohexanelene-trans-1,4- cyclohexanedicarboxamide); poly(l ,4-phenylene terephthalamide); poly(2-methyl-1.3- phenylene terephthalate); poly(2-methyl-1,3-phenylene isophthalate); polyCcis- 1,2-cyclohexalene- cis-l,2-cyclohexanedioate); poly(2-methyl-l,3-phenylene isophthalate; poly(trans-l,2-cyclohexalene-trans-l,2-cyclohexane-dioate); poly(trans-1.4- cyclohexalene-trans-l,4-cyclohexanedioate); and poly (cis-1,4-cyclohexalene- trans-1,4-cyclohexanedioate). Poly(l ,4-phenylene terephthalate), poly(l ,4-phenylene terephthalamide), and poly(trans-l,4-cyclohexalene-trans-l,4-cyclohexanedioate are found to form liquid crystalline solutions from preliminary examinations using polarizing microscopy.
