Official U.S. Navy Photo of Dorie Miller, steward's mate 1/C, wearing the Navy Cross medal he received at a ceremony at Pearl Harbor on May 27, 1942. Miller was later interviewed by John Kinloch of the California Eagle and the interview, with this photo, was published on Oct. 7, 1943. Miller was aboard the U.S.S. Arizona in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 when the battleship was attacked by Japanese war planes. Miller took a 50-caliber machine gun and, with help from another officer, fired the gun to bring down eight Japanese planes. The following year he received the Navy Cross medal for his bravery. In his interview with the California Eagle, Miller said he had never fired the machine gun before the day of the Japanese invasion. He also said he was impressed that "thousands of white people acted as though they appreciated what I did. I feel that the drawing together of Negroes and white people is a good thing coming out of this war. I think that the unity of races will continue."
