Description

Documents: Letter of Senator James Rood Doolittle: Doolittle (1815-1897) came to Wisconsin in 1851 as an anti-slavery Democrat but soon joined the young Republican Party and was elected to the Senate in 1856. He not only supported Lincoln but was one of the few supporters of President Andrew Johnson, for which he lost the backing of Wisconsin Republicans. Unelectable in 1869, he returned to the Democratic Party, and this letter written in 1880 reviews the history of American party politics in the 15 years following the Civil War. (6 pages)
