Mrs. Zelma Watson George takes her oath of office as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations at swearing in ceremonies at the State Department. Also at center is James J. Wadsworth, new U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Administering the oath at right is Chief of Protocol Wiley Buchanan. Also pictured are L.J. Merchant (assistant secretary for European affairs) and A.F. Lancey, another U.N. delegate. Dr. Zelma Watson George (1903-1994) served on the US delegation to the United Nations from 1960-1961. From 1966-1974 she was director of the Cleveland Jobs Corp. A trained singer and musician, she received a Rockefeller Foundation grant to research African American music, which brought her to Cleveland to study materials in the Cleveland Public Library John G. White Collection. In Cleveland she met, and in 1944 married, attorney Clayborne George.
