Description

On back of burnished albumen print: "S.J. High School, Santa Clara St. Source: Gertrude Pyle Lauriston, 7/6/66. San Jose High School -- Mr. Wilson, principal." The name Mamie Feeley was originally written in pencil along one side of the back of the photo, but has been crossed out in pencil. Mamie Feeley was class of 1889. It is likely that this is a photo of the High School Senate and Delphic Literary Society, rather than a photo of the entire class. The African-American student is thought to be Ben Gray, who was in the Senate in 1888, but is not listed as part of the graduating class. Principal Wilson is seated in the center of the photograph, with what is thought to be English teacher Frances Sawyer seated in center as well. George Crothers is seated on the right side, in profile.
